Lade

 We live in a part of Trondheim called Lade (pronounced Lah-duh).  We live on a peninsula!  One of us thinks that's exciting and the other one just rolls her eyes when it's brought up. The fjord surrounds us on three sides.

 Famous Norwegian cathedral in Trondheim.  So famous we can't remember the name.  It's huge and was built in the 1100's.  We're waiting for Wendy to come visit before paying to go inside.

Saying Goodbye to Oslo/Sandvika

Sister Pedersen (left) and her husband replaced us as office secretaries.  Wonderful people who are native to the Oslo area.  Sister Johansen, mission president's wife, is in the center. Dana teaching Elder Pedersen how to do finances for the office.Norm teaching Sister Pedersen the duties of mission secretary.Shortly before moving to Trondheim we were invited to dinner by Eldbjorg, on the left.  "Ellie" was baptized a year ago and is a strong member in the Sandvika Ward.  Next to Ellie is Elizabeth's friend who is investigating the Church.  In the middle is Elizabeth, also baptized a year ago, Sister Johansen, and Dana.Sister Johansen with Elders Crandall and Dearden, mission AP's and both from Springville, Utah at a conference shortly before we moved to Trondheim.  Several Assistants to the President have patiently given us hours of help as we struggled to learn our duties in the office.

The AP's moved into the apartment we vacated.  Dana wanted to be sure they never forgot us by placing probably 20 photos of us around the place, on the walls, inside cupboards, and even .....

After saying goodbye to good friends in the Sandvika/Oslo area we took the 7 hour train ride to Trondheim.  We rode the train rather than fly because we had so much stuff.  Sounds like us.  Dana had never ridden a European train before and Norm hadn't been on one since Germany 40 years ago.  Trains have improved over the years.  Here we are sitting in the dining car.

Old timers will remember the winter Olympics held in Lillehammer, Norway sometime in the 90's.  The train passed through Lillehammer on the way to Trondheim so we grabbed a quick photo so we could say we'd been there.

We are here!

We arrived in Trondheim on February 8th where we  spent one day with the Sorensen's, the couple we replaced. This photo shows the Sorensen's last institute class where the young adults honored the couple, including this American flag dessert prepared by Corrie, a recent convert in Trondheim.

Combat Training

P-day in Trondheim.  Elder Mathews had all 8 of us together at the church to do a combat training workout.  Ever heard of Hindu squats?  Pretty rigorous.  Norm Dana mostly stood by and watched.

 This is "Coach", our ruthless leader who led us in combat.  Elder Mathews (Mesa Arizona) also has us on an eating healthy diet.  His dad was a linebacker at the Y during the Steve Young days.

The mission flew us to Stavanger for a training.  The second guy on the left is the brother to a friend of Andy's in Cedar City who runs a gym.  We've actually met that guy before.  Johannes and his wife, Johanna (first one on the right) are a wonderful Norwegian family who live in their hometown of Stavanger and run the Center for Young Adults there.

House warming lunch and more

This is what we're going to buy when we get home.  How many grandkids can fit in there at once?  The little electric guy is actually made by Mercedes Benz.

Dana had a house-warming lunch at our new apartment for the six missionaries in Trondheim.  Elders Mathews and Gardner.  Elder Gardner, from Springville, Utah, was just transferred to the mission office as an AP.  We now have 4 AP's and 3 of them come from Springville.  What's with that?

Monthly we will be riding the train 6 1/2 hours north of Trondheim to the small branch in Mo i Rana.  We've visited here before but wanted to show a picture from the branch president's front porch.  Amazing.

Mo i Rana

In Mo i Rana and throughout Norway snow and ice accumulate over several months and then melt in March (we hope).  Mo had received a foot and a half of snow the previous week, ice had melted, and then frozen again, making it nearly impossible to walk on it.  This shows the parking lot of the small church in Mo.

A Christmas Eve Norway Tradition

Going backward.  On Christmas Eve Norway has a tradition to put candles on graves at cemeteries when it becomes dark.  At 5:00 pm all the church bells in the country ring.  This shows our friend Elizabeth kneeling at her mother's grave.  He mom died when she was 13.  Candles in graveyards at Christmas. Another nice tradition.
